Southern Collective Experience A Journal of Culture
Submit Work

Art doesn't stop at
the door. Neither do we.

SCECO is the nonprofit arm of the Southern Collective Experience, built on the conviction that creative expression is not a luxury — it is a lifeline. We bring literary programming, arts education, and community connection to the people and places most often left out of the cultural conversation.

From detention centers to rural communities, from urban open mics to regional conferences, SCECO goes where the work is needed and stays until something takes root.

What We Do

Bringing Creative Solutions
to Communities in Need

01
Literary Programming
Behind Bars

SCECO's flagship outreach brings poetry, storytelling, and creative writing into detention centers and correctional facilities — giving adults behind bars tools for reflection, voice, and dignity that extend beyond incarceration.

02
Youth Arts
Education

Working with teens and at-risk youth through schools, community organizations, and after-school programs, SCECO uses creative writing and performance as a framework for self-expression, confidence, and critical thinking.

03
Community Events
& Gatherings

Through Collective Sessions — open mics, seminars, readings, and regional conferences — SCECO creates space for artists, writers, and community members across urban and rural settings to connect and collaborate.

Collective Sessions

Events Built on
Real Community

Collective Sessions is SCECO's event programming — bringing together writers, artists, educators, and community members in spaces that center creativity and conversation. These aren't networking events. They're gatherings.

Sessions take place in cities and small towns alike, because the South's creative energy doesn't concentrate in one place, and neither do we.
