Carmen Acevedo Butcher, Ph.D

Carmen Acevedo Butcher, Ph.D., is an author, teacher, poet, and award-winning translator of spiritual texts. Her work has garnered interest from various media, including the BBC and NPR's Morning Edition. A Carnegie Foundation Professor of the Year, Fulbright Senior Lecturer, and Fulbright Scholar, Acevedo Butcher's translations have made accessible The Cloud of Unknowing, Hildegard of Bingen's works, Brother Lawrence's Practice of the Presence -- a "Best Books of 2022" selection -- and more. Core faculty and dean at the non-profit Center for Action and Contemplation, Carmen currently teaches at the University of California, Berkeley, in the College Writing Programs.
